How to Fix Black Screen Problem on Apple TV 4 With SSH

Several users have reported seeing the black screen of death on their Apple TV, specifically the 4th generation. Such problem is common among technology devices but not on a digital media player.

We decided to look further into this and found that the black screen issue does appear to be on the Apple TV 4. But it only happens to those who recently used the Pangu tool to jailbreak their Apple TV.

In this tutorial, we will show you a way to resolve this problem.

If you have successfully jailbreak your Apple TV 4 already, you must know that it’s far more different in comparison to a regular jailbroken iPhone or iPad. There is no jailbroken store aka Cydia or anything like that.

The only thing given to users is access to SSH. And that what we will be using to fix this black screen problem on your Apple TV.

How to Fix Reboot Loop on Apple TV 4

  1. SSH into your Apple TV using ssh [email protected]
  2. wget http://nitosoft.com/ATV4/fixBoot.sh
  3. chmod +x fixBoot.sh
  4. ./fixBoot.sh

As explained by sciencography, what you just did will add a script to /etc/rc.d and by doing so, that will unload and reload lockdownd. There is no explanation as to why this black screen occurred, but this will help you fix the issue.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is not the first time that we see an Apple device stuck on a blank screen or just shows a black color on its screen, we often see this on an iPhone, iPad, or even Macbook but not on any generations of the Apple TV.

If you haven’t jailbreak your Apple TV yet, head over to 9to5mac’s article and learn how to do it. All you need is a free developer account and follow their guide. The black screen could be the end result of this jailbreak so be super careful and follow the instructions above if you ever run into it.

  1. Hi!
Is it going to hurt to run the “black screen of death” commands, even though you’re not having the issue yet in order to prevent it from happening?

  2. The above ssh commands do fix the reboot loop issue. Unfortunately, however, it would appear that the fix is NOT retained once the Apple TV 4 device is turned OFF (i.e. no power supply whatsoever) Because when the device is turned back on again the reboot loop ‘black/white screen of death’ problem reoccurs until you re-enter the ssh commands via terminal again .

  3. I got this from a forum

So I noticed this guy on twitter (Johnny Bravo) talking often with NitoTV. He said he fixed the USB issue ‘by running the fixBoot after deleting the /etc/rd.c file USB works until u reboot but still, I take it ️’

So I reached out for more info and he gave me the following:

    ssh into atv then rm -rf /etc/rc.d , chmod +x fixBoot.sh , ./fixBoot.sh

Here is the convo on twitter – http://i.imgur.com/HghERvX.png

I tried it out (not sure if I did it correctly, I just followed the original black screen fix but replaced it with his info.) – no luck over here. Thought someone over here would be able to figure it out.
