My iPhone X Won’t Turn On! How Do I Fix This Dead Device?

Some people have already failed to turn on their iPhone X after purchasing it. If you recently opened the packaging just to face a black screen of an iPhone X, here are some fixes you may want to try. We suspect that the causes for this to happen are very general. This is a good thing, by the way.

Many users get excited when they buy a new iPhone. As a result, they randomly forgot how to turn it on. Another popular reason could be that the iPhone X that you purchased came without battery juice. This could mean that Apple forgot to charge it before shipping it to you. Although it’s no great experience, these reasons should bring you joy since it can be fixed in no time.

Follow some of our tips below if your iPhone X is not turning on or just shows a black Apple iPhone screen.

To RESTART YOUR IPHONE X

This device belongs to you now. If it’s acting up, a force restart will do the trick. Unlike older iPhone models, force restarting your iPhone X is different now. Instead of using a combination of your home and power buttons, we will be relying on the volume controllers.

To restart your frozen iPhone X:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button
  3. Press and hold the Power button until you see the Apple logo

Hopefully, this method will turn your iPhone X on. If it continues to show a static black screen, move on to the next step.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD CHARGE YOUR IPHONE

Like I mentioned earlier, some people recently reported that their iPhone X came in uncharged. After unboxing their iPhone, the battery icon is showing on the screen instead of an Apple logo.

Well, that’s easy to fix, isn’t it? All you have to do is find the charging cable and plug it into a wall outlet. Connect your iPhone to the charger and wait for about 10-20 minutes. Your iPhone X will start turning on.

RESTORE USING ITUNES

This is my least favorite method. However, it solves the issue flawlessly. If your iPhone X still refuses to power on, your only option left is to restore it.

On your computer, download the latest version of iTunes from this page. Connect your iPhone X to the computer. If the iTunes software recognizes the iPhone, you should see it display right on the screen.

Go to Summary > Restore. Choosing this option will erase everything from your iPhone and place it back to factory settings. Once your phone is restored, follow the on-screen instructions to set it up again.

That’s pretty much it for fixing an iPhone X that doesn’t want to turn on. Some devices can be very stubborn, and the 3rd method could be your only resort. We always recommend the first two solutions since they’re the quickest.

REASONS YOUR iPHONE X WON’T TURN ON

We already mentioned above that you should probably make sure that your phone is charged fully before using it, especially if it was just sent to you. If you find, however, that this isn’t the reason the phone won’t turn on, you should be aware of a few other possible reasons.

DIRTY CHARGING PORT OR CABLE

If you connect your iPhone to power and it still isn’t turning on or charging after thirty minutes, then the reason could be a dirty charging port or charging cable. Unplug the phone and clean out the port.

Make sure no debris or build-up are preventing the battery from charging. You can clean the port with a toothpick and a minimal amount of isopropyl alcohol – very carefully. If this doesn’t work, locate a different charging cable and see what happens.

FAULTY BATTERY

If you have had your iPhone for a while, it could be a bad battery that is causing your problem. If the phone doesn’t turn on, plug it in, and see if the charging indicator lights up. If it says the phone is charging, then your connector works, but you still might have a bad battery.

POWER BUTTON IS BROKEN

If you don’t feel as if your power button is working, then plug your phone into its power source and see if it will automatically turn on. If it has power and turns on, then your problem may be a faulty power button.

DISPLAY IS BAD

If it doesn’t look like your phone is charging and you can’t see an indicator, it could be possible that your display isn’t working. Turn your phone on and test it for sound. You can also try moving the mute toggle back and forth to see if the phone vibrates. If you can hear sound but see nothing on the display, this could be an issue.

LOGIC BOARD IS BROKEN

Finally, if nothing else seems to be the problem for your iPhone X not turning on, then you may have a bad logic board. In this case, it will need to be replaced.

HELP! IT TURNED ON BUT NOW WHAT?

Now, what happens if you do get the phone to turn on but run into other issues?

THE PHONE TURNS ON BUT GETS STUCK DURING THE STARTUP PROCESS

If this happens, connect your iPhone to a computer and locate your device. For an iPhone 8 or later, press and quickly release the volume up button on the device, then press and quickly release the volume down button.

Press down and hold the side button until you enter recovery mode.

When you are given the option to restore or update, you want to go with update. The computer will then attempt to reinstall iOS without erasing any of your data as it would during a hard reset when you restore factory settings.

The process may take more than 15 minutes, and when it is done, the device will exit the recovery mode, and then you need to repeat the steps.

THE PHONE TURNS ON, BUT THE PHONE SCREEN IS BLACK OR FROZEN

In this case, you will want to try the forced restart we previously mentioned for a dead iPhone. It won’t erase the data on your device, and it can be done even if the phone screen and display are black.

For an iPhone 8 or later, press and quickly release the volume up button and then the volume down button and then press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo. It is similar to the process you used when your phone was stuck in the restart process.

STILL NEED HELP?

If your iPhone X or other iOS device is still not turning on and you have exhausted all of our solutions, it may be time to contact customer support at the Apple store.

Contact them if you still see a black screen after charging the phone, doing a forced restart, or the device makes a chirping noise when you unmute it and connect it to power.

Additionally, contact the Apple store if your screen is on but doesn’t respond, you can’t force the device to restart, or if you get it to turn on, it is stuck on the Apple logo, displays a solid color, or isn’t recognized in iTunes.
